Last night, I took a two hour drive down to the Cherry Hill Crowne Plaza for Monster-Mania Con 28, Philadelphia’s semi-annual horror film and memorabilia convention. While I never need all that many people at this show, their prices are typically lower than other area shows and that makes it worth the drive. There were a few cancellations and a couple of late additions, but the draws were the original dynamic duo, Batman stars Adam West & Burt Ward; seven stars from The Walking Dead; a Return of the Living Dead reunion; and actors Mads Mikkelson, Verne Troyer, and fresh off the set of Star Wars Episode VII, Peter Mayhew. The longest lines of the evening went to WWE Legend ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper and The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun. Piper just liked to took and take his time with the fans, while Yeun’s line grew rapidly while he was eating dinner. I stopped for dinner along the way, but by the time I arrived, I got who I needed and had quite a bit of time to spend chatting with friends.
Colin Ford ~ I obtained the “Under the Dome” star’s autograph for my grandmother, who is a huge fan of the series.
Jeff Kober ~ Seeing of ‘Dodger’ from the Vietnam drama “China Beach” was a surprise to my mother, who had never checked the guest list prior to arriving.
James Karen ~ What can I say about the marvelous James Karen? At 90 years young, he has the energy of a teenager and is still working in films & television. He was an original cast member on “All My Children” and has since appeared in films such as The Return of the Living Dead, Wall Street, and The Pursuit of Happyness, as well as commercials as Mr. Pathmark.
Michael Berryman ~ Another vibrant guest, Michael appeared in the Academy Award winning film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, as well as in The Hills Have Eyes, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and The Devil’s Reject. And here’s a fun fact: his daughter went to Johnson & Wales.
‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper ~ This WWE Legend & Hall of Famer had the longest line and just before I got to him, took a little break at which time I held down the fort for him. While often the heel in the ring, Piper genuinely cared about all of his fans in attendance.
Clu Gulager ~ I think it’s safe to say that the 85 year old Gulager has appeared in just about everything and worked with just about everyone in the industry. He also lives a block away from the famous Pink’s Hot Dogs and apologized if he smelled like onions.
Verne Troyer ~ Here’s another trooper guest, the infamous Verne Troyer. Troyer of course appeared as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers franchise, Griphook the Goblin in the first Harry Potter movie, and as a band member in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Special thanks to the Hagan family for putting on another fantastic show, which is one of the few that still caters to the fans. While I am not always able to attend every Monster-Mania, I hope I get back down there soon!!!
